Q&A
Background
What inspired you to start playing music? What are your primary instruments and training?
I can trace my earliest memory to watching the original disney movie, Snow White, when all the dwarves are cleaning and they started drumming on everything ion the house and make a song out of it. I must have been 7 or so, and I would pull out all the tupperware and play drums on it with wooden serving spoons! Luckily my parents were very encouraging of music and put me in piano starting in kindergarten. They bought me my first guitar in 8th grade and that was history.
Creative Process
How do you write new music? What's your approach to composition and arrangement?
Music hits me from any angle at any time. It truly is inspiration. It can be lyrics first, scribbled on a notepad. It can be melody or chord progression first and then you fit the lyrics into that existing structure. Sometimes it’s a guitar riff I played 7 years ago and then one day it unfolds into an entire song just like that.
Motivations
What do you like most about playing music? What motivates you to be a musician?
The most important aspects of music for me are the powerful emotions that songs can elicit from just writing it or hearing it (as songwriter or a listener). Songs can be very emotionally powerful in this way and can give us the gift of closure, catharsis, nostalgia, and so much more. The other aspect that is most fulfilling is bringing community together, seeing everyone bonding and having a great time.
